Closing Time

Closing time has become one of my biggest wins.

In my last post, Learning Each Other, I shared the daily rhythm my daughter and I created. There are some fun parts to it. “Move and Groove” is our daily movement time. I do my stretch and cardio circuit, my son does his Cosmic Kids yoga, and my daughter is still figuring out what she likes. For now she rows and walks the dogs. Sometimes it turns into a full dance party in the kitchen. We now have a carefully crafted family dance playlist when the movement strikes.

But my most successful addition happens after “Come to the Table.”

After dinner, we play Closing Time by Semisonic and clean the downstairs living area together. We sing. We dance. We move quickly, sometimes trying to finish before the four minute and thirty-four second song ends.

Everyone takes a task or simply notices what needs to be done.

It feels like a win every time. Something about ending the day this way softens the weight chores used to carry. The house resets, and so do we.
